Clair McCorkle

I was born in Birmingham, Alabama and attended Auburn University where I studied Medical Technology. My husband and I met at Auburn and both of our careers brought us to Winter Park after college. We raised our two now adult children in Winter Park. I have had an interest in art and painting all of my life and have enjoyed learning from many great artists/mentors and instructors through the years.

Artist’s Statement

I paint mostly figurative work using bright colors and cheerful subject matter. Many of my ideas for paintings come from our favorite vacation spots. Bahamas is probably our number one favorite. I love the vibrant blues of the water, the white beaches and the array of colors in nature.

I work with acrylics and most all of my work is figurative. The subject of my painting usually depicts people in a relaxed environment. Sometimes a beach scene or an island market for example, with vibrant colors and broad strokes.

I try to keep the painting loose and focus on lighting and shadows. I start every painting with a loose sketch of the scene I’m creating using a brush and watered down paint. I then paint in the darker colors first and gradually add in lighter, brighter colors. I try to work evenly across the entire canvas, not focusing too long on one specific area.

Painting for me is relaxing and is also very rewarding when a painting comes together as planned and sometimes not as planned.

My work hopefully benefits others by taking the viewer to a place that reminds them of vacation or experiences as a child - going to the beach or riding a bike, swimming. I hope that my work brings a feeling of happiness and relaxation to the viewer.

Influences

I painted for many years with a wonderful artist - Jeanne Schubert. Jeanne was a local artist from Maitland but moved over to the coast to Edgewater late in her career. We painted once a week in her studio in Edgewater for many years. Her painting style and use of colors and lighting resonated with me and are still part of my routine as I start a painting and work through it from beginning to end.
