Margaret Schnebly Hodge

Margaret Schnebly Hodge

Raised in Florida from an early age, Margaret Schnebly Hodge grew up during the pop culture movement which ushered in the counter-culture movement of the 1960’s. Her mother’s work in outdoor recreation and her father’s work in the space industry introduced Margaret to a wide range of experiences from running barefoot outdoors in sunshine, rain, and storm, to watching rockets reach space and the moon for the first time. The complex and dynamic flux of societal norms and the ever-dynamic physical activity and environmental conditions of those years remain influential in her work today.

Hodge graduated from Daytona State College and then received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Florida where she took classes from muralist and sculptor Hollis Holbrook and the creator of photomontage Jerry Uelsmann.

Hodge’s traveling exhibit of more than thirty large format paintings has shown in seven major venues around the state. Her work is in both public and private collections including the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach and the L. Gale Lemerand Permanent Collection at Daytona State College. Showing in more than fifty juried and invitational exhibits, she has received significant artistic awards and honors including a State of Florida Artist Enhancement Grant. Beyond her fine art she has helped steer major art focused community programs and development and has held top office in three not-for-profit state-wide arts organizations.

Artist’s Statement

I have always looked to the internal and the eternal to find meaning in the physical world. Thus thoughts of the space time continuum and flux are essential to my work both as content and as process. My lines, marks, and colors are metaphors for the underlying energy and elements of all things physical and perceived. Within this process, my work may also deal with barriers; self-imposed or constructed by societal arrangements, and the methods used to break free or survive them.

Primarily a large-scale painter of figurative and non-objective work, I often begin with an over-all toned background. I may find shapes within the initial tones that function as catalysts for additional mark and form making. Using scrafitto, glazes, scumbling, and impasto, I veil and reveal, disrupt, flow, harmonize, and agitate media across the surface. Sometimes manufactured materials add external dimension to the implied space of my paintings.
