Joyce Shelton

Joyce Shelton is a contemporary artist living and working in central Florida. Having spent most of her career as a professional illustrator and product designer, she has now turned her focus towards fine art painting in a variety of mediums. Inspired by nature and the Florida landscape, her color palette reflects the rich pinks, purples and oranges of tropical foliage and the calming blues of coastal waters.

Following graduation from The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, she began her career as an artist with two major department stores illustrating fashion, home goods and jewelry for newspaper ads. When photography replaced illustration, ending her job, she found success as a full time free-lance illustrator. A partial list of clients from that time includes Walt Disney World, Darden Restaurants, Kimberly Clark, Harcourt Publishing, AAA, Costco, several local and national advertising agencies and Target Corporation. While freelancing illustration, she worked in her home studio and perfected a monotype printing technique using an old hand-made ringer washer press and spent several years exhibiting them at juried fine art shows throughout Florida. Currently she works at perfecting her fine art painting while continuing to license her art and design products for the gift and home industry. Her art can be seen on a variety of products including dishes, fabric, gift wrap, greeting cards, coasters, puzzles and home and garden items.

Through workshops and personal mentoring, she has studied with several professional traditional and abstract artists, awakening her desire for further self-discovery as a fine art painter.

Artist’s Statement

My paintings serve as memories of time and place. Teetering somewhere on the edge between abstract and representational, I find deep satisfaction in pushing the boundaries where color meets form. I am inspired by the vivid hues and abstracted shapes of the French Post Impressionists and fascinated with the way color and light moves through the natural world. I want my art to not only brighten a space but evoke a sense of joy.

Influences

I am influenced by many of the old masters - particularly the impressionist and post impressionist painters as well as many contemporary artists who abstract the landscape

Publication/Media Pieces

I did the poster art twice for the Winter Park Sidewalk Art festival as well as two times for the Maitland Rotary Festival. Most of my art throughout my career was in the commercial illustration arena.

Art Festivals

Exhibited for several years at juried art festivals throughout Florida including the Winter Park Sidewalk Festival, The Winter Park Autumn Art Festival, SunFest in Palm Beach, New Smyrna to name a few.
